The terms we are working with are late modernity, ontological insecurity, hyperpluralism and social exclusion (the politics of inclusion and exclusion).
Late modernity is the period of time that we currently find ourselves in. Late modernity is not concerned with whether or not we are living in postmodern times, and in turn, moves around these debates. As described by Ferrell, Hayward and Young, the period of late modernity creates for a time where there is confusion and a loss of security – the pressure of economic and cultural globalization creates for chaos and leaves people wondering where they belong as all types of media circulate and interconnect the world (2008, 56).
The mall, in the context of late modernity, is according to Grober (2007), "not only a place to shop but to be...[malls are] major public spaces where...people interact, form their identities and make sense of the world" (Olivier, 2008, 101). It is from here that we go forth with our project and attempt to find these ideas and terms in practice.
